The Sniffer

She could detect impurity in others, a highly sought after skill in this day and age. With one sniff, she could tell the authorities who was the troublemaker, the outsider, the other. At first, they only used her skill in the court room. After all, troublemakers would live up to their name. When the crime rate didn’t decrease, they went on the offensive. They gathered people in large auditoriums, abandoned malls, and empty parking lots. They lined them all up so that she could sniff them one by one. It was a quick and dirty process, one with only two possible outcomes: a thumbs up or a thumbs down. A thumbs up meant that you got to go back home to your family, go to work, go to school, keep being a productive member of society. a thumbs down meant you were sick or damaged or foreign or liberal. These unfortunate ones were sent to work camps where they could cleanse their souls by picking crops in the hot sun or taking customer complaints for cable companies. She rested at night by knowing that she was helping to make society better, that because of her, the streets were clean and everyone was on their best behavior. Best of all, once she was done and all the degenerates were put away, the air would smell so sweet and so clean and so pure.
